You are blessed and highly favored.
Growing up on the sunny island of Trinidad was a blessing. The warm water of the Caribbean, the soft sands on the beaches and the Trinidadian food are all experiences that will be etched in my memory forever. Those experiences are truly wonderful mainly because of loving parents who took the time to share them all with me. My mother molded me, cared for me and trained me to live out Christian values in all of life’s seasons. Proverbs 22:6 instructs parents: “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
New parents do not always “get it right” with their children and my folks were no exception. That being said, my mother “got it right” by speaking blessings on her children and claiming Gods favor on their lives. My mom had had a habit of telling me daily that I was blessed and highly favored. I heard that over and over, every day. Like anything you are accustomed to hearing, you eventually take those words for granted.
Fast forward from my adolescence to adulthood and those words had a renewed importance in my life. After moving to the States, away from the comforts of family and home, I longed to hear those familiar words. I found myself calling my mom simply to hear her verbal epilogue to me: “You are blessed and highly favored”. This life has a habit of wearing you down without God’s precious word to prop you up. I found myself becoming more reliant on His Word to keep me lifted up, grounded and at peace in tough situations.
In thinking of my mom, I am reminded of the words spoken to Mary (Jesus’s mother). The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her in Luke 1:30 that she was “highly favored” and chosen to bear God’s son. While Mary did not question Gabriel’s authority or his prophetic words, she did question “how” this would happen, since she was a virgin. He simply responded, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you”.
We don’t know why Mary was chosen by God but she was. God had big plans for this woman of humble heritage. Guess what, He has big plans for us too.
Regardless of your history, pedigree, education, background – you ARE blessed and highly favored by God and he has plans for you. I know this because He said it in His word. Psalms 139: 13-14 says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
God made you wonderful and highly favored. Don’t ever forget that.
