Dating

As we approach Valentine’s day I am reminiscent of how much I yearned to be a part of a relationship in my single years. I had a close relationship with God but I wanted someone to love, grow old with and share life’s experiences together.

Growing up in Trinidad, I dated little and sat on the sidelines listening to my friends banter about their dating experiences.  In my heart, I had always daydreamed about dating/living internationally and was prompted to visit the States for an extended period after exchanging emails with “this guy” in New England.  The decision to leave Trinidad and my family (my comfort zone) was both exciting and scary.  Once here, the experience challenged me be more flexible, rely on God and trust my own instincts!  In both the good and difficult times, He spoke to me through his word and I felt it was His plan and purpose for me to be here.  God also sent folks into my life to comfort me and provide counsel.

After a particularly difficult season in my life, I was in the library studying when a man passed by and said, “everything is going to be okay”.  Simple words but very comforting to me at the time.  I had never seen him before and did not see him again.  We know that God sends angels to guard us (Psalms 91:11) and I felt like God sent him to encourage me.  Not long after, I married “that guy” from New England and I can’t imagine my life without him.

If you are single this Valentine’s Day, I would encourage you to not lose hope! (Jer 29.11).  Listen to God and trust Him during your seasons of life and be expectantly progressing towards your future but don’t postpone life while you are seeking it.

Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you..
